GA4 Purchase Event Not Firing on Shopify — a Diagnostic Checklist

Shopify shows the orders. GA4 shows… almost none. When your GA4 purchase event isn’t firing, every downstream number — revenue, conversion rate, ROAS — is wrong, and you’re optimizing ads blind.

The good news: it’s almost always one of a handful of causes. Here’s the checklist to isolate it fast.

The mental model

A GA4 purchase gets recorded only if all four are true:

  1. The event fires on the order-confirmation (thank-you) page.
  2. It carries value, currency, and a non-empty items array.
  3. It actually reaches your GA4 tag (correct Measurement ID / property).
  4. It’s not blocked by consent.

Break any one and purchases vanish. Walk the checklist top to bottom.

The diagnostic checklist

1. Confirm there are orders. Trivial, but check Shopify has orders in the period you’re comparing.

2. Watch a live event. Open GA4 → Admin → DebugView (or Realtime). Place a test order (or use a recent real one on the same browser). Do you see a purchase event on the confirmation page?

3. No event at all? The tag isn’t firing on checkout.

  • On Shopify’s current checkout, the purchase event should fire on the order-status / thank-you page via Customer Events (web pixel) or the Google & YouTube sales channel.
  • If you use Google Tag Manager, confirm the container is allowed to load on the checkout/thank-you page and the GA4 purchase tag has a trigger there.

4. Event fires but shows no revenue? Missing parameters.

  • Inspect the event in DebugView: are value and currency present? Is items a non-empty array?
  • A purchase event without value/items is treated as incomplete — it won’t report revenue correctly.

5. Consent Mode blocking it? A misconfigured Consent Mode (especially for EU/UK visitors) can block the event entirely instead of adjusting collection. Check whether purchases only appear for consented sessions — or disappear across the board.

6. Right destination? Confirm the Measurement ID matches the GA4 property you’re actually looking at. Sending to the wrong property looks identical to “not firing.”

After you fix it

Re-test in DebugView until you see exactly one clean purchase event with value, currency and items. Then reconcile a closed period: GA4 should land within roughly 5–10% of Shopify (a little lower is normal — see why GA4 doesn’t match Shopify). If GA4 is suddenly ~2× Shopify, you’ve flipped into the opposite problem — duplicate purchase events.
