Before you trust your tracking — or after any change to your theme, checkout, tags or consent banner — you need to prove the purchase event actually fires. But you don’t want to charge a real card, and you really don’t want to pollute your analytics with fake sales.

Here’s the clean way to do it.

Why a draft order won’t work

The tempting shortcut — create a draft order in the admin and mark it paiddoes not test your tracking. It never runs the storefront checkout, so your client-side purchase event, Meta Pixel and CAPI never fire. You’d prove your fulfillment flow, not your analytics.

To exercise tracking you need a real checkout in the browser — just without a real charge.

The method: Shopify test mode

Shopify lets you run a complete, realistic checkout with no money moving:

  1. Enable test mode. In Settings → Payments, either activate your gateway’s test mode or select the Bogus Gateway (Shopify’s built-in fake provider). A banner will confirm the store is in payment test mode.
  2. Go through checkout like a shopper — from a product page, add to cart, and complete the thank-you page. Use the documented test card numbers to simulate a successful payment (there are numbers for declines and errors too).
  3. The real thank-you / order-status page loads, so your GA4 purchase, Meta Pixel Purchase and CAPI event all fire exactly as they would live.
  4. Turn test mode back off when you’re done.

After the checkout.liquid migration, the purchase event fires through the Customer Events / Web Pixels sandbox — a test order is the cleanest way to confirm that path still works.

Watch the event land (three windows open)

Run the test order with these open so you see it, not just assume it:

  • GA4 DebugView — enable debug mode (GTM Preview or the GA Debugger extension) and watch the purchase event arrive with value, currency and items.
  • Meta Events Manager → Test Events — enter the test_event_code so your event shows up here without being counted in reporting or optimization. Confirm you see one Purchase (from Browser and Server if you run CAPI) with a matching event_id — that proves deduplication is working.
  • Server container preview (if you run server-side) — confirm the event reaches the server and forwards a 2xx.

Don’t pollute your data — clean up

Test orders can quietly distort your numbers if you’re careless:

  • Use Meta’s test_event_code so purchase tests never count toward Pixel/CAPI reporting or ad optimization.
  • Watch GA4 in DebugView, not standard reports — DebugView is live and isolated. For repeated testing, exclude your own IP via GA4’s internal traffic filter, or use a separate test/staging property.
  • Archive or cancel the test order in Shopify afterwards (and refund if you used real gateway test mode). Keep your order data clean.
  • Do a final live sanity check after re-enabling real payments: one genuine order (or a low-value real purchase you refund) confirms nothing behaves differently outside test mode.

FAQ

How do I test purchase tracking without paying? Use Shopify’s payment test mode / Bogus Gateway to complete a real checkout with a test card — the thank-you page fires your events without a charge.

Will a test order mess up analytics? Only if you don’t isolate it: use Meta’s test_event_code, watch GA4 in DebugView, and archive the test order afterwards.

Can I use a draft order? No — marking a draft paid doesn’t run the storefront checkout, so no client-side event, Pixel or CAPI fires.

What’s the Bogus Gateway? Shopify’s built-in fake payment provider; test card numbers simulate success or failure so you can complete checkout without a real charge.
